The paper titled “Controlling Modular Reconfigurable Robots with Handheld Smart Devices”, authored by David Ko, Nalaka Kahawatte, and Harry H. Cheng, was awarded the Best Student Paper Award at the 2011 ASME/IEEE International Conference on Mechatronic and Embedded Systems and Applications, Washington, DC, August 29-31, 2011. Currently, David Ko is a PhD student and Nalaka Kahawatte is an MS student.

Free UC Davis Summer Academy on Computing and STEM Education
With support from the National Science Foundation (NSF), the Center for Integrated Computing and STEM Education (C-STEM) at the University of California, Davis will host two 2011 UC Davis Summer Academies for in-service teachers during the week of August 8, 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m, in 1062 Bainer Hall on the university campus. The first academy, August 8-10, will be focused on Pre-Algebra and Algebra I Support through computing and the second academy, August 11-12, will be directed towards STEM Technology & Design.

On June 30, 2011 the UC Davis School of Education hosted Robotics Camp for local middle school students visited the C-STEM Center. The C-STEM Center gave a robotics demonstration to about 40 middle-school students visiting the campus.

On Thursday June 16th, the UC Davis Center for Integrated Computing and STEM Education (C-STEM) hosted a group of middle school students from WUSD Project Lead The Way’s (PLTW) Gateway Academy summer camp which is a joint program between PLTW and the Society of Manufacturing Engineers Education Foundation (SME-EF). The camp offered the students a week-long summertime experience in programming, building robots, designing eco-friendly jewelry and launching rockets. The C-STEM Center demonstrated the iMobot to the camp.

The UC Davis C-STEM Center has received a grant of $500,000 from the National Science Foundation for a project entitled “Computing Research Experiences for STEM Teachers (CREST).” The project will create an enduring partnership between secondary school science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) teachers and UC Davis faculty mentors and C-STEM Center to promote teachers’ professional development and create a teaching “infrastructure” that stimulates and inspires them to effectively guide their students towards computing and STEM related careers and post-secondary study.
