On Saturday January 15th, the River City High School Robotics Team participated in their first robotics competition, the Bay Area Regional Robotics challenge that was held at Bellarmine College Preparatory school in San Jose. The River City “vtechrangers” and their “Tri-Bot” were the 2nd highest scoring robotic team out of 51 high school robotic teams.
The Vex Round up challenge is played on a 12′ x 12′ square field covered by foam tiles. The primary playing object for this game is a 7″ diameter ring called the tube {donut}. There are 36 tubes on the field at the start of the match with an additional two tubes per alliance available for preload making a total of 40 tubes. The objective of Round Up is to score or put your alliances tubes onto goal post, there are 4 fixed goal post located along the field perimeter there are also 5 movable waited bases with goal post attached to them located on the playing surface. The goal post can be owned by having the most tubes of your alliance color scored or put on that goal post at the end of the match. The ladder is a 36″ tall sheet metal and PVC structure located in the center of the field. The robots may climb, hang or attached themselves to the ladder to obtain bonus points at the end of the match.
The C-STEM Center provides a mechanism for collaboration between undergraduate/graduate students at UC Davis and local K-12 school clubs such as the River City High School Robotics Team. Undergraduate/graduate students at the C-STEM Center provided advice and support to Dubarrie Fagout, the teacher advisor, and his robtoics team. Everyone is amazed at the accomplishments of the team and look forward to what is possible from them in the future.
Congratulations to the River City team!
