Bright Corner Lights with Turn Signals by Diego "El Langa" Miagro ellanga@gte.net One day I was thinking that I liked how the bright parking lights looked but I was not willing to lose my turn signals. Til this day, out of the bunch of Civics with bright parking lights that I have seen I only remember seeing ONE with front turn signals. I went crazy trying to figure out how I could hook up my parking lights and have them be BRIGHT all the time (full intensity) but WITHOUT losing my front turn signals. I tried doing what everybody else does which was inverting the parking wire and the turn signal wire but just like everybody else I lost my turn signals because they were over-powered by the bright parking lights. I went to various (more than four) auto electric places and got no answers. Some told me it was too complicated, others that it was impossible, and one offered to do it for $175. I was so frustrated. What was so hard???? All I wanted was the parking AND the turn signals lights connected to the bright filament and for a relay (or something) to cut off the power to either the right or left parking light when the turn signal was activated. After a couple of months of thinking and looking around I found the "relay" I was looking for!!! It's called a "TAIL LIGHT CONVERTER." Supposedly it's used to convert a trailer's rear lights to allow them to have parking lights, brakes. and turn signals all in one light. Whatever it's for, it did the job for me! You can buy it at any Pepboys. It is made by CALTERM Model # 08081 (this number is located on top right corner of package). It has three (3) wires going in and two (2) wires coming out. The three wires going in are:
The connection is pretty straight forward, disconnect both wires on each corner light (leave the black wire as it is). Then choose where you are going to put your converter. I put mine next to the air filter (in the engine compartment). Run three wires (two will be going from light to the converter and one from converter to light) from each corners to converter. Connect both parking light wires (one from each side) to the wire on the connector that says BRAKE. Do this using one of the three wires mentioned above. Connect Lt turn signal wire from corner light to Lt turn signal wire on converter using the second of the three wires earlier mentioned. Do the same with the RT side. If you have done everything as followed you should have all three wires going into the converter connected. Now you have two wires coming out of the converter, one for the Lt side and the other for the Rt. Use the last of the wires you ran from the lights to converter and use it to connect the wire coming out of the converter to the corner lights' bright filament (where the turn signal wire was connected). I did a very neat job on mine. I tucked all three cables going from driver's side in a wire loom and pulled them behind the grill to the air box opening on the passengers side so they are completely out of view. That's it your parking light should be at full intensity at all times and that same light should blink when the turn signal is activated. Ed. Note: I did this install, and I ended up with rapid turn signals whenever I had the corner lights on (this is when either the parking lights or headlights are on). The turn signals blink at a normal rate when you don't have the parking lights or headlights on. [ back ] |
